Some Really Useful Linux Command Line Tricks

Some Really Useful Linux Command Line Tricks Posted by Hodge in Featured, Linux 4 comments

Many people, especially users new to the world of Linux, are afraid of the command line. However, the command line is incredibly powerful, and in many cases can save time, and execute tasks much faster than GUIs. Personally, I love the command line, and what follows is a list of tips and tricks I find [...]

Batch Export Amarok Album Art to the Album’s Containing Directory

Batch Export Amarok Album Art to the Album’s Containing Directory Posted by Hodge in Linux, Ubuntu 5 comments

Despite being a Gnome user, I’ve been using Amarok – a KDE application – as my main music player for some time, and love it. I’ve also spent a lot of time within Amarok downloading and importing Album art for almost all of my music, with the exception of a few obscure albums for which [...]

Update 10/02/09: I’ve made one more worthy addition to the list, making it a “list 0f 11 Top nn lists for Linux”, since this list contains 8, and the Games list contains 25…
OK, it’s a little cheeky, but “Top 10″ lists seem to be the in thing at the moment. So, here’s my Top 10 [...]

Install Adobe AIR 1.5 and the Google Analytics Reporting Application on Ubuntu

Install Adobe AIR 1.5 and the Google Analytics Reporting Application on Ubuntu Posted by Hodge in Featured, Linux, Ubuntu 7 comments

Sometimes, I’m just too lazy to browse to the Google Analytics site – all that bookmark clicking, logging in, choosing profiles etc. I just can’t be arsed. I could, of course, leave the page open, and click refresh every now and then, or even bookmark the profile/report and go back later. That’s too obvious, and [...]

Finally, Sun release 64 Bit Browser Plugin Support for JRE (almost) Posted by Hodge in Linux, Ubuntu 6 comments

Update 05/02/09: Sun have actually released the update – no more beta -  so I’ve modified “Install Java JRE 1.6.0 (Update x) in Linux as the Default Java Runtime, including Firefox Browser Plugin” to reflect this (even the title has changed – although the URL remains the same!). The following tutorial remains for reference etc.
Back [...]

Full 64 Bit (or 32 Bit) Web Development and PHP/MySQL IDE with Eclipse 3.4 Ganymede and PDT 2 Posted by Hodge in Eclipse, Featured, Linux, Ubuntu, Web Development 6 comments

I’m probably a little late with this article, since PDT2 has been out for a few weeks now! PDT 2 is an improvement  on v1, and of course, Ganymede is also an improvement on Europa -thankfully, the installation process has also improved and is much easier than my previous post on the subject. There is [...]

Gnarly Malware – Hijacks Website .htaccess and Steals Search Engine Traffic

Posted by Hodge in Security, Web Development 1 comment

A friend in the US called me a few days ago, asking me to take a look at his website, calypsoislandtours.com, since his site traffic had dropped dramatically, for no obvious reason. Upon further investigation, he discovered that only search engine traffic was affected, which, as with many if not most websites, happened to be [...]

Recursively Search and Replace Terms in Multiple Files with grep, xargs and sed

Posted by Hodge in Environment, Linux, Ubuntu 9 comments

I recently offered to update some simple information on a website for a friend – normally an easy enough task, but unfortunately, even though the original developer of the site generated it with PHP, they didn’t utilise a database, or even combine common data/information/text (such as the header and footer of a HTML template) into [...]
